Written by Alan Bennett, this film has his generous hand all over it. It’s 1916 in a Yorkshire town. Its young men are off to the war, leaving a disparate group of townspeople to sing Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius. So the group decides to take a chance on appointing Dr Henry Guthrie as their choirmaster’s replacement, despite Guthrie's homosexuality, Germanophilia and atheism.
